Sometimes life becomes easier when there is a guardian angel to hold our hands and guide through difficult times. Bihar Government and Nidan are working hand-in-hand to make the above statement significant in the lives of the deprived and destitute.
Government has enacted various social legislations for the welfare of poor and unprivileged but unfortunately people in need could avail its benefits. Either people are not aware with these schemes, or do not know how to benefit from them or even if they make efforts due to certain inherent limitations of the system remain outside its preview. Nidan through its rights based approach of community empowerment actively playing role of facilitator and catalyst to expand the reach of these welfare schemes.
Ms. Rupam Devi who is currently residing at Mahua, Vaishali has received support of Rs.1 lakh under the scheme of “State Migrant Labour Accident Scheme” with the enduring pursuance of Nidan. Under this scheme, if a migrant labour demises in a road accident. His or her immediate dependent is entitled to receive assistance of Rs. 1 lakh as compensation from the State Government.
Late Mr. Devnarayan Singh was resident of Vishunpur, area. His poverty and unavailibity of any suitable employment at the village level forced him to become a truck driver in Delhi leaving behind his wife, his two sons and his old parents in the village. In the absence of her husband, Rupam Devi was consistently harassed physically and mentally by her mother-in-law. The condition of Rupam Devi worsened as her husband died in a road mishap. On 9th April, 2009 on his way to deliver the goods, he came in between Swift and Ford Fiesta. He died on his way to the hospital. A FIR was filed in the Gurgaon DLF phase-1 Police station by his colleague Mr. Avadh Kishore Singh.
A relative of Rupam Devi, Ms. Sumitra Devi is an active member of Nidan. She spoke about the death of Mr. Devnarayan Singh with Nidan members and requested for some help for Rupam Devi. Arbind Singh, Executive Director informed her about “State Migrant Labour Accident Scheme” and assured all possible assistance in regard to avail benefit of the scheme. As the first step, all the necessary documents were procured- Death Certificate, Identity proofs, Post mortem Reports and Copy of FIR. The Delhi team of Nidan helped to obtain Death certificate of Mr. Devnaryan from Gurogawn Municipal Corporation.
After that, an application was filed by Rupam Devi to claim the compensation money in the office of Labour Commissioner, Hajipur. An enquiry was setup to investigate the matter and after thorough investigation and verification of documents, the report was sent to the head of the concerned Department. At last, Rupam Devi received the compensation money of Rs.1Lakh.on 2nd July 2010 by Director DRDA. |
