
The fifth General Assembly of Women in Informal Employment Globalizing & Organizing (WIEGO) was held from 19th to 24th April 2010 at Belo Horizonte in Brazil. 77 participants from 17 countries participated in this meeting. Mr. Rakesh Tripathi, Program Manager, Legal Aid and Policy Advocacy participated in this four day event and he also participated in election of WIEGO board members.
He shared Nidan’s realistic work model on street vendors, domestic workers and rag pickers aimed at inclusive development of these unorganized workers including women. Mr. Rakesh Tripathi also shared progress and challenges regarding implementation of National policy of street vendors in Bihar.
A full day conference on “Inclusive Urban Planning and the working Poor" was also held in collaboration with the Department of Political Science, Federal University of Minas Gerais during this assembly
Ela Ben Bhatt, founder of Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA) delivered the key note address at the 5th WIEGO General Assembly. SEWA is a trade union of poor working women which has more than 1200000 members. Ela Bhatt is also a founding member of WIEGO. In her address she highlighted the common cause captured in the phrase "livelihoods versus businesses” and inspired the audience to put a common fight against various challenges

Ela Bhatt is also a founding member of Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing (WIEGO). Ela Bhatt highlighted the common cause - captured in the phrase "livelihoods versus businesses" - and inspired us to jointly face the challenges ahead.
