Centre for Environment Education (CEE) is carrying one year capacity building programme titled as “Regional Resource Persons Training Workshop cum Agenda Preparation Meetings (RRPTWAPMs)”. Under this programme within the four regions(Northern, Eastern, Western & Southern) of the country CEE in coordination with local organizations organizing series of one day training workshop on “Public Awareness Campaign for Municipal Solid Wastes and Plastic Wastes.” This initiative is being supported by Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), Govt. of India. This training programme aims to impart essential knowledge and skill enhancement on environment and waste management related work. NGO personnel and others who are involved with the waste management issues are the main target group for this training. With RRPTWAPMs training it is expected that trainees will be able to coordinate public awareness more effectively, both planning as well as budgeting aspect. It is planned this training will organized at 250 different locations in the country in the year 2010-2011.
On 10th June 2010 Northern Region training, which covers state of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Delhi, and Chandigarh, was held at Lucknow. This training was conducted at Lucknow University with the support of Regional Centre for Urban and Environmental Studies, University of Lucknow.
Focus Area:
· Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSWM) - Issues, prevalent practices and best practices which could be adopted; institutional & financial opportunities/ mechanisms available for integrated waste management.
· Plastic Waste Management (PWM) - Issues, prevalent practices and best practices which could be adopted and institutional & financial mechanisms available for integrated waste management.
Objective of the workshop:
To strategize a road map for the participating states for better management of education and awareness programme and campaigns on municipal and plastic waste management.
The regional workshops aimed at facilitating participants from different states to devise an action plan for week-month long campaign activities along with campaign activities and budget. Innovative campaign strategies like publication in the newspapers, campaign through vehicle (Rath Yatra), screening of issue based short films at local cable and radio programme disseminating awareness on related issues, challenges, possible interventions and action plan were discussed and described in detailed manner.
Participants of the workshop:
The workshop was attended by state representatives comprising officials from State Environment Departments, State Pollution Control Boards, and State Departments of Municipal Administration, Urban Local Body officials of selected cities, NGO representatives and private companies dealing with waste management numbering approximately 50-55.
The state representatives attended the regional workshop will act as State Resource Persons and they would be expected to conduct similar training at state level. Various schemes, strategies and actions plans which were part of this training workshop will be subsequently implemented in these states during the implementation phase.
Panel Discussions & exercise
As per the schedule, two panel discussions were held of following topics-
· Ideas and solutions for the issues related to Solid Waste Management (SWM)
· Ideas and solutions for the issues related to Plastic Waste Management (PWM)
The workshop concluded with an important exercise where participants were asked to prepare a plan along with the budget of a Public Awareness Campaigns for Municipal Solid Waste and Plastic Waste management.
Mr. Rakesh Tripathi, from Nidan participated in this workshop. During the panel discussion, Mr. Tripathi gave a presentation based on his work experience and Nidan’s best practices on Solid Waste Management.
