Riots and violent incidents in North East Delhi resulted in the death of more than 50 people and around 253 people were injured. Violence was reported in the areas of Seelampur, Brahampuri, Jafrabad, Karawal Nagar, Maujpur, Kardampuri, Babarpur, Gokulpuri and Shivpuri. Several houses, vehicles, shops, places of worship, scrap market and even a petrol pump were vandalised. Mobs clashed by pelting stones and shooting. Shops and vehicles were torched. People living in these areas were most affected. People lost their lives, home, and livelihood. Daily wagers and casual workers for whom earning their livelihood is their priorities were affected. The low-skilled, daily wage earners live in small urban villages in Karawal Nagar.
Nidan has been actively trying to help the people of Karawal Nagar. Nidan began intervening in the area by-
- Making food accessible to the affected people.
- Working towards the livelihood restoration in the affected areas.
- Bringing communal harmony
Nidan distributed more than 300 packets of food. Each packet contained 5 kg flour, 2 Kg daal, 1 Kg Oil, 5 packets Biscuits, 1 Kg salt, 1 Kg Horlicks and Sanitary napkin packet. The packets were distributed in Khajuri Khas E Block, Gali No – 5, Khajuri Khas E Block, Gali No – 4, Sri ram Colony, Chand bagh, Khajuri Khas C Block, Garhi Mandu and Karawal nagar.
The team also visited the different areas of the North east Delhi and made list of street vendors who have lost their carts in the riots. They also met the vendors and asked for their needs. Carts were also distributed to some of the vendors. Nidan also identified the home based workers who have lost the equipment. Electricity meters of many houses were destroyed. Nidan team help them with the installation of new meters.
Team also helped the people in getting their FIR done and their other documentation for the compensations. Affected families were also helped to fill the entitlement forms and were also helped in accessing the claims from the Govt
