COVID- 19 Relief
The entire country is facing severe threats of the pandemic COVID-19. As India goes under complete lockdown for 21 days to combat the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, the total number of Covid-19 patients in the India crossed the 2902-mark on April 3rd, 2020.
There are economic and social challenges and drastic consequences of the COVID-19 on the informal sector workers such as Safai Sathis, waste picker workers, domestic workers, daily wage workers, construction workers, street vendors, auto rickshaw workers, home based workers etc.
These people need immediate help and materials for their protection from COVID -19. Lockdown-related mass unemployment is pushing large numbers of the working poor towards shelters in search of food. Cities’ shelters do not have the capacity to cater to the rising demand for food, nor are they spatially distributed. Distribution of food is hampered by restriction on supply of raw materials. Large crowds at shelters are making the poor susceptible to disease overall, not just Covid-19.
The current focus is on health responses and social distancing. These people without economic and social support and worrying about how to feed their families and earn an income, cannot, even if they wanted to, practice social distancing and responsible health practices. Therefore, a comprehensive response to the pandemic is one that has is rooted in both physical distancing and infection control with increased social protection to them.
Nidan is working to give immediate support to those who are in in crises by providing dry food support to the most vulnerable families in Delhi.
